Dear [fname],

Thermometer

This will be my 10th year of running worldwide marathons on 5 continents to raise money for kidney cancer research at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts in memory of my brother John. Because of the generosity of hundreds of people over the last 10 years we have raised a total of $56,173.00 – we now only need to raise $43,827.00 to meet the goal of raising $100,000.00 for kidney cancer research. To ensure that we meet the goal of raising $100,000.00 I will be running four more worldwide marathons, including my 6th continent. The marathons, and dates, are as follows:

September 28, 2008
Berlin, Germany Marathon

May 31, 2009
Stockholm, Sweden Marathon

March 22, 2010
Cape Town, South Africa Ultra Marathon [34.8 Miles] * My 6th Continent

April 17, 2011
Boston Marathon

I am looking forward to the challenge of finishing the final 4 marathons and to end my worldwide marathon adventures at the Boston Marathon in 2011 where I will also celebrate my 75th birthday.

I would greatly appreciate your continued support to help in the fight against kidney cancer by donating to this years Berlin marathon. 100% of all of the donations made will go directly to kidney cancer research as I pay for all of the expenses and do all of the work myself. If your company has a Matching Gifts Program I would greatly appreciate your using the Program to help in the fight against kidney cancer. Your generous tax-deductible donation will go to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Biologic Therapy Research Program and will be placed in the Dr. Michael Atkins Kidney Cancer research fund in memory of John Rebello. The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centers Tax ID# is 042-103-881.

Buenos Aires Marathon Update:
US Map of States DonationsFor your information I have broken down the 2008 Berlin, Germany marathon for kidney cancer research donations by the month they were made as well as where the 10-year total donations came from. As you can see from the 1999 to 2008 donation sources we have brought kidney cancer awareness to 21 US states [green] and 1 foreign country. We recently received a donation from the state of Ohio, which brought our count to 21 US States. To help bring awareness to the other 29 US states [Red] and as many foreign countries as possible I would greatly appreciate it if you would forward the newsletter to family, friends, and people you know who live in those states. This is a great opportunity for us to let people throughout the US and around the world know about the efforts that are being made to find a cure for kidney cancer.

Berlin, Germany Marathon Update
I have registered for the September 28, 2008 Berlin, Germany marathon, which will be my 10th worldwide marathon, that I will be running to raise money for kidney cancer research. As part of my training for the Berlin marathon I finished the Carlsbad, California Half-Marathon in a time of 1:01 [9:19 pace] – I finished 2nd in my age group of 70 to 74. On February 3, 2008 I will be running another Half Marathon race - the Surf City Half Marathon in Huntington Beach, California. I will be using all of the races that I run to work on my pace for the Berlin marathon.

Berlin, Germany – Did You Know?
Berlin is the capital city and one of the sixteen states of the Federal Republic of Germany with a population of 3.4 million in its city limits; Berlin is the country’s largest city. Located in northeastern Germany, it is the center of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area, comprising 4.9 million people from over 180 nations.

Media Update:Over the years that I have been running my worldwide marathons people have asked me a number of questions – what follows is one of the questions and my answer.

Question: What was the most rewarding experience that I had after finishing a worldwide marathon?
Answer: The most rewarding experience that I had after finishing a worldwide marathon occurred at the Budapest, Hungary marathon that I finished on September 28, 2003. After the finish of the marathon all of the runners were allowed to “relax” in the 22 pools of the Szechnyi thermal bath – the most famous Spa in Budapest. After every marathon I always have aches and pains that take a while to get over but after spending an hour relaxing in the thermal bath I had no aches and pains – a really great experience.
