Dear [fname],

b
ThermometerFantastic! August was a great fund raising month - we raised a total of $1,456.00. As of this date we have raised a total of $3,956.00 for the Buenos Aires marathon that I will be running on November 4th, to raise money for kidney cancer research at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, in memory of my brother, and best friend, John. To meet the 2007 goal to raise $10k by December 31, 2007 we will need to raise $6,044.00 in the next 4 months. With your continued support and generosity I am very confident that we will meet the 2007 goal. With these latest donations the 9-year total raised for kidney cancer research is now $52,031.00 – slowly, but very surely, we are closing in on the goal to raise $100,000.00.

If you have already donated, thank you, if you have not donated I would be honored to have you join the hundreds of people who have made donations to support the efforts to raise money for kidney cancer research.  If your company has a Matching Gifts Program I would greatly appreciate your using the Program to help in the fight against kidney cancer. To ensure that 100% of all donations goes to kidney cancer research I pay all of the expenses and do all of the work myself.

Your generous tax-deductible donation will go to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Biologic Therapy Research Program and will be placed in the Dr. Michael Atkins Kidney Cancer research fund in memory of John Rebello. The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centers Tax ID# is 042-103-881

Buenos Aires Marathon Update:
For your information I have broken down the 2007 Buenos Aires marathon for kidney cancer research donations by the month they were made as well as where the 9-year total donations came from. As you can see from the 1999 to 2007 donation sources we have brought kidney cancer awareness to 20 US states and 1 foreign country. To help bring awareness to the other 30 states and as many foreign countries as possible I would greatly appreciate it if you forward the newsletter to your family and friends.

I would not be able to publish my monthly newsletters without the very creative Graphic design work of Christian Riggs, President of Riggs Creative Group [www.riggscreativegroup.com]. Christian has not only given his time and design expertise to the newsletter but he also designed and maintains my website.

Buenos Aires Marathon Update:
The Buenos Aires marathon will be my 9th worldwide marathon and 5th continent that I will be running to meet my mission to run marathons on 6 continents and raise $100,000 for kidney cancer research. I have made my Airlines reservations and will be leaving for Buenos Aires on October 30th [16 hour flight] and arrive in Buenos Aires on October 31st. I will have 4 days to recover from any jet lag or time difference problems before the marathon on November 4th.

Right now I am in the 10th week of my 18-week Buenos Aires marathon-training schedule and for the month of September my training schedule calls for long runs [Saturdays] of 18, 19, 15, 20, and 21.

If you know anyone from the US that will be running the 2007 Buenos Aires marathon I would greatly appreciate it if you would have them get in touch with me at rjreb@aol.com. As of this date there are 50 runners from the US that have registered to run the Buenos Aires marathon. Buenos Aires is the first Latin American metropolis to exceed a million inhabitants, the “New York of the South”. The city is divided into 48 Barrios [neighborhoods] for administrative purposes. The division was originally based on Catholic parishes, but has undergone a series of changes since the 1940’s. A newer scheme has divided the city into 15 communes.

Media Update:Over the years that I have been running my worldwide marathons people have asked me a number of questions – what follows are some of the questions and my answers.

Question: How do I prepare for my worldwide marathons?
Answer: To prepare for my worldwide marathons I have a detailed 18-week training schedule that I follow. My weekly training schedule is: M=cross train [bike/swim], T = 4 mile tempo run, W = 6 mile run [at marathon pace], TH = speed runs, F = 4 mile easy run, Sat = long run, Sun = rest. Also as part of my 18-week training I try to run at Least one ½ marathon and one 10k. To prevent injuries during my training I stretch before and after all runs and drink lots of liquids. I have found that as you get older it takes much longer for your body to recover from injuries - it took me almost 9 months to recover from my Bangkok marathon hamstring pull.

Training Update:
The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center [BIDMC] kidney cancer research efforts are being led by Dr. Michael B. Atkins, M.D. He is a cancer clinical investigator and is internationally recognized for his research in renal cancer. Dr. Atkins has led
some of the pivotal clinical trials that have influenced the current treatment of patients with renal cancer. The goal of Dr. Atkins kidney cancer research is to translate basic science discoveries into better detection and therapies for individuals stricken with kidney cancer and to ultimately find a cure.
